Most microorganisms are surrounded by a lipid membrane. There are a wide variety of disinfectants that disrupt lipid membranes killing viruses and bacteria. SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped virus which is also surrounded by a lipid membrane. Only a few disinfectants have been rigorously tested against SARS-CoV-2 in the lab, but the EPA maintains a database of products it recommends for use against SARS-CoV-2 on the basis of their proven efficacy against similar viruses. There are 4 classes of compounds that appear to be effective including alcohols, reducers, oxidizers and quaternary ammonium salts.
